The Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County (BGCCC) unveiled a state-of-the-art Exergame Lab at its McKinney Club. Funded by the McKinney Community Development Corporation (MCDC), the new facility merges physical activity with gaming to offer a unique and engaging fitness experience for youth in the community.
The Exergame Lab incorporates advanced technology that tracks athletic performance, movement and reaction times. This innovative approach to exercise, known as exergaming, aims to make fitness fun and accessible for kids by combining exercise with interactive games. The lab is designed to promote overall health and well-being among club members aged 6-18, encouraging increased physical activity and fostering social and cognitive growth.
According to Exergame Fitness, gamification has proven effective in increasing engagement, enhancing social skills and promoting cognitive growth. The Exergame Lab not only aims to improve fitness levels but also seeks to teach children that technology can be a tool for promoting a healthy lifestyle.
“We are incredibly grateful to the McKinney Community Development Corporation for their generous support in making this Exergame Lab a reality,” said Shawn Wills, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County. “This new space will provide our club members with a state-of-the-art environment where they can stay active, healthy and engaged through exercise and gaming.”
According to an official statement, this initiative also aligns with the broader mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County, which has been serving the needs of children in the area since 1968. The organization is dedicated to helping young people reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.
The MCDC, a long-standing supporter of community initiatives in McKinney, views the Exergame Lab as a significant step forward in enhancing the quality of life for the city’s youth. “The McKinney Club is a vital gathering space in our community,” said Angela Richardson-Woods, MCDC board chair. “The new Exergame Lab aligns directly with our strategic priorities and represents a significant step forward in promoting physical activity and well-being among our young community members.”
