Plano is once again staking its claim as a North Texas innovation hub. NTxBio (“NTx”), a pioneering biotech firm specializing in cell-free biomanufacturing, has announced plans to build a state-of-the-art production facility in the city. The $31 million project is expected to generate more than 170 new jobs, marking a significant investment in the region’s growing life sciences sector.
Backed by a $1.479 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund, the move underscores the state’s commitment to bolstering biotech and life science industries.
“Texas is the epicenter for groundbreaking, life-saving medical research and home to thousands of biotech and life science firms,” said Governor Greg Abbott in an official statement. “Working together, we will keep Texas on the cutting edge of biotech research and development and save more lives.”
A Breakthrough in Biomanufacturing
Founded in 2015, NTx is redefining the future of pharmaceutical production. The company develops pharmaceutical-grade raw materials critical to the creation of RNA and protein therapeutics — essential tools in modern medicine, especially in treating cancer and rare diseases.
What sets NTx apart is its use of cell-free (CF) biomanufacturing. Unlike traditional methods that rely on living cells, CF technology enables rapid, scalable production of biologic materials with fewer contaminants and lower costs. NTx’s approach allows for accelerated research and faster deployment of treatments in response to global health challenges.
Plano: A Strategic Launchpad for Growth
The new facility will complement NTx’s research and development headquarters in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Together, the two sites will expand the company’s capacity to manufacture both its proprietary instruments and essential raw materials, with a focus on using domestically sourced inputs.
“NTx’s decision to invest in Texas is a perfect example of the innovative and pro-business environment our state offers,” said Representative Katrina Pierson. “By creating new jobs and fostering cutting-edge research in the life sciences sector, this investment will strengthen our economy and help shape the future of healthcare in Texas. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of NTx’s work in our community.”
A Welcome Addition to a Thriving Ecosystem
As NTx sets up shop, it joins a growing number of high-tech firms choosing Plano as a base for operations, R&D and talent development. The move represents not just another corporate expansion, but a meaningful step in the region’s rise as a leader in biotechnology and life sciences.
“The North Texas life sciences industry is thriving, and Plano is rapidly establishing itself as a premier hub for innovation in this sector,” said city of Plano Director of Economic Development Doug McDonald. “We are proud to welcome NTx to our growing roster of innovators and extend our gratitude to Governor Abbott and to Adriana Cruz with the Texas Economic Development & Tourism Office for their invaluable partnership in securing yet another milestone victory for Texas.”
Also, adding to Plano's lineup of life science facilities is the Texas Research Quarter, a $4 billion life sciences innovation district spanning 200 acres, which was approved in 2024. Dallas-based NexPoint Development Company LP is leading the project, supported by a financial plan that includes a tax increment financing reinvestment zone.
Centered around the former Electronic Data Systems (EDS) campus in Plano’s Legacy neighborhood, the development will feature more than three million square feet of space dedicated to advanced research, development, and cGMP manufacturing. The main campus will house flexible facilities tailored to life sciences, while additional offsite parcels will be included in future phases or developed as build-to-suit projects to accommodate specific tenant requirements.
