McKinney Greenlights $942 Million Budget, Lowers Taxes

McKinney is planning ahead for growth, with new investments in public safety, city services and even commercial air travel on the horizon. As part of its newly adopted budget for 2026, the city council approved funding for major infrastructure projects, additional staff and a modest property tax rate reduction.

What Residents Can Expect

McKinney residents will see a slight break on their property tax bills this year. The city council officially adopted a $942 million budget for Fiscal Year 2026, lowering the city’s property tax rate from $0.415513 to $0.412284 per $100 of assessed value. The new fiscal year begins October 1 and runs through September 30, 2026.

The budget includes $232.1 million in the general fund and a hefty $327.7 million dedicated to the city’s capital improvement program. From roads and utilities to community amenities, this investment reflects McKinney’s continued commitment to supporting rapid growth while maintaining a high quality of life.

Residents will notice slight increases in water and wastewater rates. Wastewater services will rise by 5%, and water services by 4%, reflecting higher costs from the North Texas Municipal Water District.

Expanding City Services

To meet the needs of a growing population, the city approved nearly 60 new staff positions, 27 of which fall under the general fund. Public safety is a major priority, with five new hires each for the police and fire departments. Other positions will go to parks and recreation, the library, public works, development services and general city operations.

“This budget reflects our city council’s commitment to being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars while planning strategically for McKinney’s future,” said City Manager Paul Grimes in an official statement. “By maintaining a modest tax levy, expanding public safety staffing and making major investments in infrastructure, we are positioning McKinney to continue delivering high-quality services as our community grows.”

McKinney National Airport Takes Flight

Perhaps the most eye-catching investment is nearly $16 million for the city’s airport fund. McKinney is in the middle of a historic shift in North Texas aviation. On July 18, city leaders broke ground on a commercial passenger terminal at McKinney National Airport (TKI).

For over 40 years, TKI has served general aviation. By late 2026, it will join DFW and Dallas Love Field as the third commercial airport in North Texas. The new terminal is expected to serve 200,000 passengers annually, with expansion potential for more than one million travelers each year.
