On May 4, Prosper ISD was named the winner of the large school district category at the 2025 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, earning a $100,000 grant in recognition of its outstanding work in public education.
The awards were announced during a ceremony in downtown Austin attended by educators and community leaders from across Texas. Admiral William H. McRaven, former chancellor of the University of Texas System, delivered the keynote and helped recognize winners in 11 categories. In total, 68 finalists were honored and more than $480,000 in cash and grants were distributed.
As previously reported by Local Profile, Prosper is one of the fastest-growing towns in the county — and its school district is keeping pace.
Honoring Texas Educators
Since 2002, the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards have distributed more than $14 million to teachers, counselors, principals, early childhood centers, school boards and districts across the state. This year’s winners included educators from cities large and small — highlighting the depth of commitment found in every corner of Texas.

“At a time when public school educators face many challenges, it’s critically important that we honor the extraordinary individuals who are inspiring the next generation of Texans,” Winell Herron, H-E-B senior vice president of public affairs, diversity and environmental affairs, said in an official statement. “Their work not only changes lives — it defines the future of our state,”
Notable 2025 winners include:
- Cindy Gonzalez, J.P. LeNoir Elementary, Donna ISD – Elementary Rising Star
- Matthew Trevino, Roan Forest Elementary, North East ISD – Elementary Leadership
- Dr. Alicia Adkins, I.H. Kempner High, Fort Bend ISD – Secondary Leadership
- Vicki Rowe, Taylor High School, Taylor ISD – Secondary Lifetime Achievement
- Dr. Anabel Ruiz, Carolyn G. Bukhair Elementary, Richardson ISD – Elementary Principal
- Dr. Sarah K. Jandrucko Academy, Mansfield ISD – Early Childhood Facility
- Lamar CISD, Rosenberg – School Board
Each winner received a cash prize for themselves along with a grant for their school or district.
A Competitive Selection
Educators are nominated by community members or apply directly. Finalists are chosen through a multi-phase selection process involving students and faculty from Texas State University and Trinity University, who help evaluate applications. Judges conduct school visits and in-person interviews to determine winners.
“We heard remarkable stories of dedication, resilience and impact during the awards selection process,” said Herron. “While it’s difficult to pick one winner in each category, all our finalists represent the very best of what it means to be an educator in Texas.”

Recognizing Growth and Impact
As Collin County continues its rapid population growth — five of its cities are among the 15 fastest-growing in the nation — school districts like Prosper ISD are tasked with serving more students than ever. The district has responded with new schools, expanded programming and community partnerships designed to meet changing needs.
By honoring districts like Prosper ISD, H-E-B not only supports public education but shines a spotlight on the educators shaping Texas' future. Nominations for the 2026 awards are open now at HEBLovesTeachers.com.
