The State Fair of Texas recently announced its substantial impact on the North Texas economy, generating approximately $680 million last year.

An economic impact study conducted by Dr. Michael C. Carroll and the economics research group at the University of North Texas assessed the effects of the 2023 State Fair of Texas on the North Texas economy. The primary impact of the fair was estimated at $422 million, while the secondary impact ranged from $140.3 to $258.3 million. This results in a total estimated impact ranging from $562.3 to $680.3 million.

“The State Fair of Texas serves as a vital economic engine for the region, generating millions in revenue and supporting thousands of jobs,” said Michael C. Carroll in an official statement. “Its ability to attract tourists and promote local businesses not only highlights the cultural significance of the state fair but also reinforces its role in driving economic growth and community engagement throughout the state.”

The economic impact of the fair encompasses several key aspects, including supporting thousands of jobs, ranging from event staff to local vendors. Additionally, by attracting visitors from across the state and beyond, the fair significantly boosts the tourism sector, benefiting hotels, restaurants and other local attractions. The fair also collaborates with hundreds of local businesses, offering them a valuable platform to showcase their products and services.

Every year, the state fair draws millions of visitors with a diverse selection of attractions, performances and food that showcase Texas's vibrant heritage. The fair also generates thousands of jobs, supports local businesses and enhances tourism.

“We’re more than just a fair, we are a key player in the economic landscape of North Texas,” said Mitchell Glieber, president of the State Fair of Texas. “We are proud to provide a platform for local vendors, artisans and performers, while creating an unforgettable experience for our fairgoers.”

Beyond its economic impact, the State Fair of Texas supports the community through educational programs, scholarships and local nonprofit assistance. In 2023, it contributed $15.8 million in philanthropic giving and funding to the city of Dallas, including support for historical preservation and Fair Park improvements. This also encompasses grants for nonprofits in the South Dallas/Fair Park area, programs like Big Tex Urban Farm, the Big Tex Business Masterclass and the Big Tex Scholarship Program, ensuring that the Fair's influence extends well beyond its 24-day duration.
