The city of Frisco confirmed its third positive mosquito pool for West Nile virus (WNV) this season, according to city officials. The positive test came from a pool near River Trail and Copper Point Lane. In response, the city’s contractor conducted ground spraying overnight on July 18.

The targeted areas include portions of Village Lakes, Crosspointe Park, Park Place Estates, Pearson Farms, Heritage Village and Westfalls Village. Residents can view the specific spray map on the city’s website.

No Human Cases Reported

While this is Frisco’s third positive pool of the year, there are no reported human cases of WNV in the city so far. Residents can track testing results and historical data using Frisco’s GIS Mosquito Dashboard.

As Local Profile previously reported, the first positive mosquito pool was found near the intersection of McCommas Drive and Michelle Drive in the Creekside at Preston neighborhood. The other was detected in the Hunter’s Creek and Turnbridge Manor neighborhoods. At the time, the city decided not to spray the areas.

How To Protect Yourself: Wear, Apply, Remove

Frisco officials encourage residents to stay safe from the virus by following the “wear, apply, remove” guidelines recommended by the Texas Department of State Health Services:

  • Wear long sleeves and pants outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

  • Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus whenever going outside.

  • Remove standing water around the home, such as in bird baths, clogged gutters, plant saucers and splash blocks. Stagnant water is a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes that can carry West Nile.

Frisco’s mosquito surveillance runs from May 1 through November 15 each year. For updates, prevention tips and more information, visit FriscoTexas.gov/Mosquitoes or contact the Health & Food Safety Division at 972-292-5304.
