The Plano Independent School District is celebrating a major milestone in public education leadership. Its board of trustees was named one of only five Honor School Boards in Texas for 2025, an accolade awarded by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) through its annual School Board Awards Program.

This distinction puts the Plano ISD Board in the top tier of school governance statewide, recognized for setting a high bar in student achievement, ethical leadership and community collaboration.

What Sets Plano ISD Apart

The selection committee, made up of Texas school superintendents, evaluated boards across the state on several key measures:

  • Evidence of supporting student performance
  • Commitment to innovative educational projects
  • Adherence to a strong code of ethics
  • Maintaining respectful and productive relationships among members

Colorado ISD, Galena Park ISD, Memphis ISD, and Temple ISD join Plano in the Honor Board circle this year.

The Team Behind The Honor

The seven-member board includes President Dr. Lauren Tyra, Vice President Nancy Humphrey, Secretary Tarrah Lantz, and Trustees Michael Cook, Katherine Goodwin, Sam Johnson and Elisa Klein. Together, they were praised for their vision, professionalism and ability to work as a cohesive team.

“It is evident that the Plano ISD Board operates at a high level of governance excellence,” the selection committee said in an official statement. “Programs like the leadership and ambassadors program and round tables with the business community demonstrate their strong commitment to community engagement. It is this comprehensive approach to engagement that has led to ongoing progress and community trust to pass a bond and VATRE in the school district.”

In June, the board was already named Region 10’s 2025 Outstanding School Board, making them eligible for this next round of statewide honors.

From Past Success To New Possibilities

This isn’t the first time Plano ISD has reached this level of recognition; the district also earned Honor Board status in 2014. Now, the trustees are once again in the running for the program’s top distinction: Texas’ Outstanding School Board of 2025.

The final interviews will take place on Sept. 12 during txEDCON25, a joint conference hosted by TASA and the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. The winning board will be announced the following day, alongside other Honor Boards and regional honorees.

For Plano ISD, this recognition is a signal that the district’s approach to governance continues to make a measurable impact, both in classrooms and across the broader Texas education landscape.
