North Texas’ equine therapy organization, ManeGait, named Tricia Nelson its first-ever chief executive officer. The appointment marks a new era of growth for the nonprofit as it prepares to double its capacity through a $12.1 million expansion known as The Beacon Project.
From Volunteer to Visionary
Nelson’s journey with ManeGait began in 2008 as a volunteer, just as her daughter Brianna became the nonprofit’s first rider. Since then, Nelson has held multiple roles, including certified instructor and program director, before stepping into executive leadership. Now, as CEO, she will lead the organization into its most ambitious chapter yet.
"I'm incredibly honored to serve in this role and believe this reflects where ManeGait is in its journey of growth," Nelson said in an official statement. "It has been amazing to witness the number of individuals and families we have had the privilege to serve."
Co-founders Priscilla and Bill Darling voiced full confidence in Nelson’s leadership. “Her deep connection to our mission and her exceptional leadership have transformed ManeGait into one of the most highly regarded therapeutic centers in the country,” said Priscilla Darling.
What ManeGait Offers
ManeGait currently serves 150 children, adults and veterans weekly through equine therapy programs that integrate horseback riding into therapeutic care. With 29 therapy horses and a community of 1,200 annual volunteers, the organization creates personalized, movement-based sessions that often lead to significant physical and emotional breakthroughs—including first words, first steps and improved mobility.
Located in McKinney, ManeGait has evolved from humble beginnings with just two horses and four riders into a center recognized statewide. In 2025, it was named a finalist for Organization of the Year (Midsize) in D CEO’s Nonprofit and Corporate Citizenship Awards.
Expansion on the Horizon
The upcoming Beacon Project aims to address a growing waitlist of more than 400 individuals with disabilities. Once complete in early 2026, the expansion will position ManeGait as one of the largest therapeutic riding centers in the country. The project will allow the nonprofit to double its weekly service capacity and significantly increase its volunteer base across North Texas.
