In a move to increase driver and passenger security, Uber recently added additional security measures for rides in North Texas.
“Record My Ride” is a new feature that allows drivers to record the drive using the front-facing camera on their phone. The program was initially tested in several cities including Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, Minneapolis and select drivers in Los Angeles.
“Every month, more than 6.5 million drivers and couriers deliver magical experiences to customers around the globe,” Uber said in an official statement. “We owe it to them to keep innovating towards our goal of being the world’s best platform for flexible work.”
Until the trial process is completed, riders will be alerted if their driver is using the new recording feature.
According to Uber, the video is securely stored and encrypted on the driver's smartphone. The video is not viewable by anyone, including Uber, unless the driver reports an incident and can attach the file to a report. If the file is not sent within 7 days of the ride, it is automatically deleted.
Also new to Uber coming this December, is real-time navigation feedback and alternate routes. Starting soon, drivers will have the ability to post real-time traffic and route information that will be visible to other drivers. In addition, drivers have access to automatic information on road work, crashes and lane closures and will be offered alternate routes to avoid them.
Uber also announced additional safety measures that are expected to be implemented in 2024. One of those updates includes verified riders, which will expand the verification of rider identities to compare rider account details against trusted data sources or an ID document. Over time, Uber will inform drivers whether they’re picking up a verified rider, so they can have additional peace of mind before accepting a trip request.
