Nestled in McKinney, Texas, the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is more than just a museum. It’s a vibrant hub where education, conservation and community engagement thrive side by side. Established in 1967 by Bessie Heard, a visionary dedicated to preserving North Texas’ natural beauty, this 289-acre nonprofit sanctuary continues to inspire future generations to protect the environment.
A Hub for Environmental Education
The Heard is both a place to admire wildlife and a dynamic educational center where visitors of all ages can learn about the natural world. With prairies, forests and wetlands equipped with scenic boardwalks, the sanctuary offers an immersive way to explore nature.
Educational programs at the Heard are designed to spark curiosity and instill a lifelong love of nature. From school field trips to summer camps and special events, there’s something for everyone. One highlight is the Heard Summer Nature Camps, which give children hands-on experiences on the trails. Campers observe wildlife, explore ecosystems and participate in activities that foster both wonder and responsibility — nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards.

A Commitment to Conservation
At its core, the Heard Museum is dedicated to preserving native habitats and wildlife. Its diverse ecosystems are home to countless plant and animal species, supported through research, habitat restoration and community involvement.
One standout initiative is the seasonal Native Texas Butterfly House & Garden, which provides a habitat for native butterfly species. This engaging exhibit promotes biodiversity, supports pollinators and educates visitors on the critical role pollinators play in sustaining ecosystems.
Engaging the Community
Community support is vital to the Heard’s mission. Volunteers play an essential role, whether it’s leading guided tours, assisting with habitat restoration or maintaining museum exhibits.
The museum also hosts family-friendly events year-round. Among them is the much-loved Dinosaurs Live! exhibit, returning Sept. 6, 2025, through March 1, 2026. Featuring life-size animatronic dinosaurs, it’s an unforgettable way to bring prehistoric times to life. Another community favorite, the Native Plant Sale, encourages sustainable landscaping while supporting biodiversity and raising funds for the sanctuary.
