The Allen Philharmonic Orchestra & Symphony Chorus is set to present Maurice Duruflé's Requiem, a masterpiece of choral music, on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 7:00 PM. The performance will take place at the Lowery Freshman Center Auditorium, located at 368 N Greenville Ave, Allen, TX 75002.
Duruflé's Requiem, Op. 9, is renowned for its serene and contemplative character. Composed in 1947, the work draws extensively from Gregorian chant themes, infusing them with rich harmonies and orchestration to create a profound sense of peace and consolation. Structured in nine movements, the Requiem features parts for soloists, choir, and orchestra, offering listeners a deeply moving musical experience.
In addition to the Requiem, the concert will showcase three distinctive works for string orchestra:
- Three Nigerian Dances for Strings and Timpani by Samuel Akpabot: This piece blends African rhythmic elements with Western classical forms, resulting in a unique and engaging composition.
- Serenade for Strings by Edward Elgar: Celebrated as one of the gems of the string repertoire, Elgar's Serenade is cherished for its lyrical melodies and expressive depth.
- Finding the Words by Michael Markowski: A contemporary work characterized by its sparkling, jazz-influenced style, adding an energetic contrast to the program.
Tickets for the concert are priced at $15 for students, $25 for adults, and $20 for seniors aged 62 and above. They can be purchased at the door or in advance through the Allen Performing Arts Center's website.
