Located less than 10 miles from downtown McKinney and just 30 miles from Dallas, the Heard is the perfect destination for a fun-filled family day trip. Explore 289 acres of pristine nature, indoor and outdoor exhibits, and over 6.5 miles of scenic trails winding through wetlands, forests and prairies.
Home to hundreds of species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and native plants, the sanctuary provides an immersive and enriching experience for visitors of all ages.

Heard Summer Nature Camps
June through August
Children can dive into the wonders of nature with hands-on activities, encounters with animal ambassadors, and exploration of the sanctuary’s diverse habitats. Spots are filling fast, so early registration is encouraged.
Bugs LIVE – Giant Animatronic Bugs
Now through June 29
Take a walk on the wild side with this outdoor exhibit featuring giant animatronic insects and arachnids. As you follow the trail, you’ll learn about the fascinating lives of bugs in an engaging and larger-than-life format.

Bug-a-thon
June 21, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Celebrate the finale of Bugs LIVE with this special family-friendly evening event. Participate in a daylight BioBlitz to catalog species and win prizes, then explore the world of nocturnal insects at light stations after sunset.
Native Texas Butterfly House & Garden
June 7–Sept. 27
Stroll through this seasonal exhibit where you’ll encounter free-flying native butterflies and other pollinators in a vibrant garden setting.

- Monday – Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Saturday: 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Sunday: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Bird Watching at the Heard
With over 220 bird species recorded, the Heard is a haven for bird watchers. Beginners and seasoned birders alike are welcome at the Second Saturday Bird Walks (September–June) and Third Thursday Bird Walks (year-round). Learn bird identification techniques and enjoy the peaceful sights and sounds of the sanctuary.
