The whimsical worlds of Shrek, SpongeBob, Minions and Trolls are getting the mural treatment at the under-construction Universal Kids Resort in Frisco.
On June 17, the Frisco City Council approved four vibrant new hotel murals that will greet guests at the highly anticipated family theme park.
A Colorful New Look for the Resort
Universal Destinations & Experiences presented updated artwork to the council, showcasing murals that will appear on both the front and park-facing sides of the resort’s hotel. Each mural spotlights a major franchise from the park’s themed lands:
- Shrek’s Swamp
- Minions vs. Minions
- SpongeBob SquarePants Bikini Bottom
- Trolls Fest
According to the latest renderings, the Shrek and Minions murals will adorn the hotel’s front, while the SpongeBob and Trolls scenes will appear on the side facing the park.
Construction Progress and Park Details
Construction on the 97-acre resort, located at the northeast corner of Dallas Parkway and Panther Creek Parkway, is moving forward steadily. Universal broke ground in 2023, with a grand opening slated for 2026.
The park will feature a collection of immersive lands designed specifically for children and families, anchored by beloved characters from DreamWorks Animation (Shrek, Puss in Boots, Trolls, Gabby’s Dollhouse), Nickelodeon (SpongeBob SquarePants), Illumination (Minions) and Jurassic World.
“It’s an amazing opportunity to bring these iconic stories to life for kids and families to experience, interact with and play together,” Universal Creative VP & Executive Producer Sarah Gibbon previously said. “At each point, we considered how we could design a place especially for kids where they could explore, imagine and adventure with their families and friends. They’ll be able to do all this while being fully immersed in some of their favorite stories — ones full of curiosity, laughter and joy.”
Tickets for the theme park are expected to go on sale later this year.
Operating hours will typically run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with flexibility for holidays, peak seasons and special events. Early access will be granted to hotel guests and annual pass holders as early as 8 a.m., while general admission will never begin before 9 a.m. On select dates, up to 20 times per year, the park may remain open until 10 p.m.
What the Park Means for Frisco
Universal Kids Resort is expected to deliver more than just entertainment. The development is projected to create over 2,500 construction jobs and numerous permanent roles once operational.
As Frisco continues to expand its reputation as a family-friendly hub for innovation and leisure, Universal’s arrival reinforces the city’s growing influence and its appeal to the next generation of theme park fans.
