Plano’s Longhorn Park is getting a long-awaited upgrade. The Plano City Council approved the construction contract for the park’s renovation on April 28, 2025.
The project, led by the city’s parks and recreation department, will begin June 23 and is expected to be completed by Aug. 24, 2026.
Located at 1100 Colgate Place, next to Jackson Elementary, the park will be fully closed during the 14-month renovation. School families should anticipate possible detours when walking through the neighborhood once construction begins.
What's Changing
The renovation will bring:
- A new playground with equipment for ages 2–5 and 5–12
- Safety surfacing and swing sets
- Updated walkways and rest areas
- Shade structures and a large group pavilion
- Drainage improvements and upgraded landscaping
- A fitness trail loop with markers and outdoor exercise stations
- Refreshed grills, picnic tables and a drinking fountain with a pet bowl
The design was shaped by community feedback gathered over multiple rounds of surveys and public presentations. Residents emphasized the need for added shade, better drainage and more seating throughout the park.

Community Feedback in Action
According to a 2023 digital presentation shared by the parks and recreation department, survey participants preferred individual fitness stations over a centralized hub and favored play equipment nestled into shaded areas for supervision and comfort. The final master plan reflects these preferences, with new playground zones positioned beneath the existing tree canopy.
The city also plans to improve the park’s practice fields and build an eight-foot-wide walking loop around the perimeter. The loop will include mile markers, benches and new lighting for better usability.
A Popular Neighborhood Spot
Currently, Longhorn Park includes open play fields, picnic tables, grills and a small playground. It operates daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. and serves as a gathering space for residents in west Plano. The planned updates aim to enhance the experience for children, families and visitors of all ages.
