My Possibilities (MP) recently announced that it was awarded a Blue Impact grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) to enhance the well-being of children and families.
According to MP, the $40,000 grant underscores the vital contribution of local organizations in driving positive change by addressing key factors affecting health, such as socio-economic challenges, and by fostering economic opportunities.
"Partners like Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas are crucial to advancing our mission and enhancing the lives of our HIPsters," said My Possibilities CEO Tod Marvin in an official statement. "This $40,000 grant will enable us to sustain our Healthy Lifestyles curriculum and support the MP Wellness Center, incorporating health and fitness activities into daily routines. Through the MP in Motion program, participants will receive guidance on healthy lifestyle habits, including nutrition and physical activity, encouraging HIPsters to make healthier food choices and exercise regularly."
The MP HIPster Health and Wellness program provides holistic support for adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), focusing on enhancing their overall health through targeted activities in health education, increased physical activity and general wellness. The Wellness Center, staffed by a full-time nurse, serves Hugely Important People (HIPsters), from both the Fischer Family School of Life Skills and the Employment Innovations School.
HIPsters often face challenges in health and wellness due to economic constraints, limited access to adaptive facilities and trained staff, as well as transportation difficulties. As a result, they are disproportionately affected by health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, heart disease and obesity.
Since 2011, BCBSTX has granted over $25 million to community organizations across Texas, positively impacting the lives of millions of children and families throughout the state.
“Blue Impact grants help pave the way for healthier futures for children and families across Texas,” said Sheena Payne, director of BCBSTX community affairs. “We are proud to collaborate with this year’s recipients and look forward to witnessing the impact of their innovative programs on the communities we both serve.”
