The Plano Public Library (PPL) was recently awarded the 2024 ABOS Senior Services Award by the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services. This prestigious recognition celebrates the library’s exceptional outreach efforts to seniors, including homebound individuals and residents of senior living communities.

The senior services award was presented in Indianapolis, Indiana last month during the 2024 Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services Annual Conference.

In 2023, PPL launched its senior lobby stop service to better serve older residents of Plano facing transportation or mobility barriers, ensuring they can still access library collections and services. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the library to support seniors, offering programs such as memory keepers, which facilitates conversations for individuals with early-stage dementia and their caregivers; connecting seniors, which fosters community and conversation among older adults; and Medicare 101, a program aimed at helping seniors navigate Medicare, healthcare costs and related government programs.

“PPL staff are a key component of success and their commitment to outreach for older adults reflects the core service mission,” a statement from the city of Plano reads.

According to the city, PPLis committed to sharing its expertise and experiences with library professionals across Texas and the United States. Through professional publications, conference presentations, webinars and active involvement in industry organizations, PPL contributes to the broader library community.

When possible, PPL collaborates with other library systems to highlight diverse approaches, experiences and perspectives. Staff members have shared their insights at both state and national conferences, as well as with potential local partners.
