The wait is almost over for Costco fans in Collin County. A new Costco Wholesale store is slated to open this August at the southeast corner of SH 121 and Stacy Road, on the border of Allen and McKinney.

An official opening date hasn’t been confirmed yet, but eager shoppers can go ahead and start prepping their lists.

A $25 Million Investment in Local Retail

Spanning 160,000 square feet on a 22.5-acre site, the new location represents a $25 million investment. Once complete, it will be one of the largest big-box additions to the area in recent years.

This new store is one of three recent or upcoming Costco openings in North Texas, joining a Prosper location that opened in March and another planned in Celina later this year.

Growth Drives Demand for Infrastructure

The expansion of Costco’s footprint mirrors the rapid growth of Collin County. The wholesale giant currently operates 40 stores across Texas, including three existing locations in Collin County. With the addition of Allen-McKinney and Celina, that number will nearly double.

Population growth in the region has been dramatic. Between 2020 and 2023, Collin County’s population rose by more than 13%. Celina led the surge with an eye-popping 157.6% growth rate, while Prosper increased by 40.6% and Allen grew by 6.7%, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

New Jobs and Local Economic Impact

In addition to retail access, the store will bring significant job opportunities. Costco stores typically employ between 100 and 300 people. The company is widely regarded for its employee benefits, including competitive pay, medical and dental coverage for part-time staff and a 94% employee retention rate — one of the highest in retail.

As North Texas continues to boom, Costco’s strategic expansion in Collin County signals strong confidence in the region’s long-term growth. For Allen, McKinney and surrounding communities, this new store is more than a shopping destination; it’s another marker of the area's rising profile.
