In preparation of the upcoming Great North American Eclipse on April 8, 2024, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science announced that it is providing North Texas schools with complimentary eclipse glasses.

The Dallas museum is distributing the specialized spectacles to more than 575 schools representing 37 districts, including Dallas ISD, Fort Worth ISD, Arlington ISD, Denton ISD and Richardson ISD.

The giveaway is part of the Perot Museum of Nature and Science’s mission to distribute over one million complimentary eclipse safety glasses for the once-in-a-lifetime natural phenomenon.

The glasses allow both students and teachers to witness the solar eclipse event in the safest way possible, enabling potential educational opportunities for schools in the region. Glasses are also available for purchase in the Perot Museum gift shop and bulk ordering is available by emailing [email protected]

In addition to educational institutions, the Perot Museum said that it also plans on handing out the eyewear at numerous community events across North Texas in the coming weeks, along with making them available for pickup during Spring Break (March 9 through March 17) with admission to the museum.

The eclipse's path will unfold across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, commencing at approximately 1:39:56 p.m. CDT, gradually enveloping Fort Worth and Dallas around 1:40:12 p.m. CDT and subsequently extending to Plano. By approximately 1:41:35 p.m. CDT, the spectacle will reach Frisco, followed closely by McKinney at 1:41:48 p.m. CDT. The duration of totality is expected to last up to an impressive 4 minutes and 27 seconds.

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science is located at 2201 N. Field Street, and is open Wednesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed on Tuesdays).
