Plano, Texas Prepares To Launch New Emergency Response System

The location technology facilitates accuracy in pinpointing emergency incidents, boosting response efficiency

Plano is gearing up to introduce what3words, an advanced location technology to optimize emergency response operations. Developed to streamline precise location identification, what3words assigns a unique combination of three words to every 10-foot square globally.

WBAP reported that Keysha Hogan, public information specialist at Plano's public safety communication department, emphasized the app's vital role in emergencies. "It can be along an unmarked stretch of road or a building that doesn’t have a specific entrance address in one of the nature preserves,” Hogan said. “So, identifying precisely where help is needed is critical to getting resources on the scene quickly.”

Emergencies can strike anywhere, presenting challenges in providing accurate location information. The what3words app offers a reliable solution — enabling users to easily convey their exact location, especially in scenarios where traditional descriptions may be insufficient. This technology equips individuals in distress to provide their unique what3words address to dispatchers, facilitating swift response efforts.

The effectiveness of what3words has been proven in various rescue operations globally, from rural road accidents to floodwater rescues. The app's availability in 60 languages ensures accessibility for non-English speakers.

Seamless technology integration into emergency response protocols has been ensured through comprehensive training sessions for dispatch personnel.

To promote widespread adoption and familiarity with the what3words app, Plano will host a testing session at the Texas Forever Fest, held at Haggard Park on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Emergency services such as the Plano Texas Police Department, Plano Firefighters Association, Plano Emergency Management and Plano 911, all employ what3words for emergency response.

This initiative aims to empower residents with the knowledge and tools necessary to utilize this innovative solution effectively during crises.

The app can be downloaded on the Apple App Store or Google Play.
