A prized custom-built smoker belonging to Kent Rathbun, one of North Texas’ most well-known and respected chefs, was stolen, prompting an outpouring of support. The trailer-style smoker was taken from a gated parking lot near Rathbun’s catering kitchen, located off Irving Boulevard and Mockingbird Lane, sometime before July 26.

Rathbun initially offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to its return. But within 24 hours, that figure grew to more than $11,000, thanks to generous donations from friends, fellow chefs, longtime fans and local food lovers who rallied around the chef and his team.

A Fixture In Rathbun’s Culinary Career

Valued at around $27,000, the smoker isn’t just another piece of equipment; it’s a personal and irreplaceable part of Rathbun’s culinary journey. The smoker has been a fixture in his catering operation for more than two decades, playing a central role in countless events and celebrations across the country.

According to a Facebook post, the trailer was gifted to him by a close friend in 2001 for his birthday and has since become a staple at countless events hosted by Kent Rathbun Catering, which continues Rathbun’s legacy following his work with The Mansion on Turtle Creek, Abacus and Jasper’s.

Support From The Community

Rathbun, a four-time James Beard Award nominee, shared his gratitude in another post: “I just cannot tell everyone how much I appreciate everybody's concern. Let’s find this guy.”

The Dallas Police Department is currently investigating the theft, and Rathbun is reviewing surveillance footage that may have captured the incident.
