On Jan. 28, 2024, Collin County Sheriff's Office Investigators responded to a report of a suspicious object at Scott Cemetery, off County Road 161. This marks the second incident at the cemetery in a little over a month.

According to CBS DFW, the Plano Bomb Squad was called to the scene after a possible explosive device was found near the cemetery. Residents reported law enforcement was on the scene for several hours that afternoon and did not evacuate any nearby residents.

“In collaboration with the FBI, we're conducting a thorough investigation,” the sheriff's office told Local Profile. “Based on our initial assessment of this incident, there's no discernible threat to public safety.”

Local Profile previously reported that on Dec. 14, 2023, Collin County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a potential pipe bomb report near Scott Cemetery. Upon arrival, deputies secured the area and identified a suspicious item wrapped in black tape. The sheriff’s deputies then requested aid from the Plano Police Department Bomb Squad. Investigators with the bomb squad confirmed it was an improvised explosive device (IED) and destroyed it on-site.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was enlisted to aid in the investigation of the incident. No additional information was released by the ATF.

The sheriff’s office told Local Profile any additional details are not able to be provided until the investigation is further along. It was not disclosed whether or not the two incidents are related.

“We will share pertinent information with the public only when available and without hindering the investigation,” the sheriff’s office said.

However, residents are concerned after multiple incidents at the historic cemetery.

"Second time, it's obvious something's up," McKinney resident Greg Lowry told CBS. "It's definitely a cause for concern. We want to hear more information about what's happening and how they're attempting to find out what's going on here."

Update Jan. 31, 2024 - 12:33 p.m. An earlier version of this story stated that the sheriff's office responded on Feb. 28, 2024. It has since been changed.
