The Storehouse of Collin County seeks the community’s support during “North Texas Giving Tuesday Now” to flatten a new rising COVID-19 curve: neighbors struggling with basic needs due to skyrocketing unemployment.

It’s midday in Plano when the line begins to form along 18th street—even before the truck rounds the corner. Men appear from alleyways, inside cars and from behind shuttered stores.

“The coronavirus is officially affecting me,” a Facebook friend posted in late March.

Over Easter weekend, Minnie’s Food Pantry, a Plano-based pantry that is dedicated to feeding the hungry, closed over the weekend so that their staff could enjoy the holiday.

The first time I met Cheryl “Action” Jackson, founder of Minnie’s Food Pantry, in 2016, she told me that when she first opened a food pantry in Plano, no one thought it was needed.

We see the signs. We hear stories about doctors charged with overprescribing or selling prescriptions. We read headlines about an opioid crisis sweeping the country.
