Relaxing Spa, Delicious Food And Big Rooms At Hotel Contessa In San Antonio

"This room is huge," says our older son as he opens the door. He's right. It is. And when you're traveling with kids, even for local Texas traveling, that extra space helps make your getaways more enjoyable.

But large rooms aren't the only things that matter.

Where Is Hotel Contessa In San Antonio

Located on the banks of the Riverwalk, the Hotel Contessa is a AAA Four Diamond hotel in downtown San Antonio. And it is, mind you, the only AAA Four Diamond hotel on the Riverwalk.

How Are The Rooms

The newly renovated rooms, as of Jan. 1, 2024, are big — and all rooms are what Hotel Contessa calls "Texas Sized suites," measuring 500 sq ft and up. In our suite, we could comfortably sleep a family of four, but with the extra sofa space and the double bed, we probably could've slept six. The beds were comfy, and the suite offers extra privacy and provides an ideal base for the getaway.

What's Nearby

The Riverwalk is accessible from the hotel, putting downtown sights within easy walking distance. The Briscoe Western Art is next door, and The Alamo is only a seven-minute walk as is Hopscotch San Antonio, the interactive art exhibit. Tower of the Americas is a 13-minute walk, and Historic Market Square is a little further at 15 minutes, but doable. If you're traveling with kids, and they get restless, have them burn off energy at the park Yanaguana Garden at Hemisfair, just eight minutes away.

Food Options

There are plenty on the Riverwalk, and Schilo's German-Texan Restaurant, the oldest restaurant in San Antonio, is right around the corner — and heck, The Riverwalk is packed with restaurants.

But our favorite was Hotel Contessa's in-house eatery Ambler Texas Kitchen + Cocktails. Just like the name says, it's Texas cuisine — and it's done exceedingly well. The loaded brisket nachos, for which Ambler is famous, is among the best we've had in the state. Everything was delicious and thoughtfully executed, whether that's fresh fish from the Gulf or making the perfect rustic-style mashed potatoes. "Nothing fancy, just quality ingredients and good food," chef Mike Collins told us. "That's kind of who I am."

And our server, Francisco, was warm, friendly and attentive — a superstar. Even if we hadn't stayed at Hotel Contessa, we would've gone to the Ambler. And yes, we will go back.

The Spa Is A Must

Over the years, we have been to several spas during San Antonio trips. But, oh my gosh, The Spa at Hotel Contessa is one of the best we've visited — and worth it, even if you are not staying at the hotel.

We got the couple’s experience (deep tissue and a facial), which is recommended. The staff was so kind and professional, and worked out some nagging aches. The ambiance was relaxing and upscale, and the experience is highly recommended.

Getting There

Of course, you can fly out of DFW, and as of writing, tickets can range from $178 to over $370 for the one-hour and ten-minute flight. Depending on traffic, the drive down I-35 can be around 5 hours from Legacy West. If you do drive, plan on a stop at Czech Stop, just north of Waco, for their famed kolaches. The Collin Street Bakery is a detour on 1-45, unless you are driving a Tesla and need a Supercharger. But kids get a free cookie.
