Prom is a day most girls look forward to years before it arrives. It’s a day to get dolled up, toss on a pair of high heels and wear more makeup than any average day. A day filled with glamour and fun.

St. Andrew United Methodist Church has made this event a possibility for any girl who wants to attend! They’re hosting their 8th annual FREE Prom Closet March 1–3 from 4–8 p.m. and March 5 from 9 a.m.–noon at their Smith Worship Center in Plano for any girl in-need of a dress, shoes and/or accessories.

Cool fact: In its first year, the Prom Closet provided 35 dresses to local high-school girls, and last year, 840 girls received dresses and accessories.

High-school girls from anywhere are invited, so be sure and spread the word! St. Andrew is already stocked with dresses and accessories including  jewelry, handbags, shoes and wraps, thanks to generous community members, local groups, corporations and businesses donations. Dresses sized 0 to 28 are available to choose from, many of which have never been worn.

“This year is the eighth year of the Prom Closet, organized by the St. Andrew United Methodist Women, and it has proven to be a wonderful way to reach out and serve the community,” said Devra Helffrich, an original organizer of the Prom Closet. “The impact the dress makes on the girl and her family is simply immeasurable. We continue to be grateful each year for the media coverage which is critical in getting the word out. Last year, we were excited to have visitors from Durant, Oklahoma, who were so impressed they went back to their church, presented the idea and are hosting a prom closet this year!”

Area school counselors have been provided information on their campuses. Students must be present to shop for selection of dress and accessories.

On shopping days, please park in the east parking lot off of Mira Vista and look for Prom Closet signs.

Interested in donating? St. Andrew UMC accepts dresses and accessories year-round at their drop-off in Room #133 at the church.

St. Andrew United Methodist Church

A vibrant, growing, inter-generational church. Begun in 1986, St. Andrew is located on a 21.214 acre campus at the corner of Plano Parkway and Mira Vista and includes a sanctuary, education, music and nursery wing, and columbarium.  Nearly 2,000 come together every weekend through five different worship services: Saturday 5:30 p.m.-Traditional Service in Smith Worship Center; Sunday 9:30 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. – Traditional in Sanctuary and Contemporary in Smith Worship Center. St. Andrew is an outward-focused church striving to lift the world around us toward God and provides a number of local and global mission opportunities including the Seven Loaves Community Center, which provides a myriad of services to qualifying residents of all Collin County zip codes directed at improving lives and breaking the poverty cycle.  A number of caring ministries are in place to support members in all phases of life from support groups to career care in addition to ministries focused on each age group.  Additional ministries include a strong music program with choirs, instrumental groups, as well as the Academy of Music, offering private lessons.  Selected as “Best Place to Worship in Plano” by the readers of the Plano Star Courier in 2014 and 2013, St. Andrew UMC provides each individual with opportunities to connect to the community and contribute their unique gifts to the congregation’s spirit.
