McKinney ISD primarily serves students in the city of McKinney and extends its services to parts of New Hope, Allen, Fairview, Princeton and Lowry Crossing. The district oversees 68 facilities, including administrative and support buildings, spanning more than 4 million square feet across 603 acres.

McKinney ISD currently enrolls over 24,500 students across 20 elementary schools, five middle schools, three high schools, two alternative campuses and one early childhood education center. The district has a student-teacher ratio of approximately 16 to 1. With a graduation rate of 96%, the district’s student average is 1190 on the SAT and 26 on the ACT.

According to Niche, the best elementary schools in the district are J.B. Wilmeth, Earl & Lottie Wolford, Valley Creek, Dean & Mildred Bennett and Roy Lee Walker. Dr. Jack Cockrill, Dowell, Leonard Evens Jr., Faubion and Scott Morgan Johnson were ranked the top middle schools. In terms of high schools, McKinney North, McKinney High School and McKinney Boyd, were ranked the highest. 

Choices

While where you live impacts the schools available to your child, some McKinney ISD campuses may offer transfer opportunities. When reviewing petitions for student transfers, McKinney ISD will consider each request on an individual basis. The transfer petitions will be considered by the board’s designee within 30 business days of their receipt. Transfer petitions for residents who moved in after the due date will be accepted and considered on an individual basis.

If you are looking to go another route, McKinney also offers several private schools, private preschools and special education-focused campuses. According to privateschoolreview.com, McKinney is home to 17 private schools serving 2,150 students, which accounts for 6% of all K-12 students in the area — a percentage that matches the Texas state average. 

Among the top-ranked private schools in McKinney are McKinney Christian Academy, Castle Montessori of McKinney and Collin County Cornerstone Christian Academy. The average acceptance rate for these schools is 85%, slightly higher than the Texas private school average of 84%. Additionally, 35% of McKinney's private schools are religiously affiliated, with Christian and Baptist being the most common denominations.
