As the school year begins and budgets are tight, the University of North Texas at Dallas (UNT Dallas) and the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) will host a mobile food pantry on campus on Sept. 20, from 9 a.m. to noon or until the food is gone.
This year, the mobile food pantry program has distributed approximately 160,000 pounds of food to nearly 9,000 individuals, highlighting the persistent need for food assistance in the community. According to the NTFB, one in every six children in North Texas faces food insecurity.
“Food insecurity is a serious issue in our community and UNT Dallas is committed to assisting individuals and families in need of nutritional support,” Director of Student Connections and Support, Student Affairs, Joe Posada-Triana told Local Profile. “Each month, we provide thousands of pounds of food to hundreds of people, ensuring community members receive produce, dairy, nonperishable goods and other healthy products. We are grateful to the North Texas Food Bank for their partnership in this ongoing effort.”
Launched over four years ago during the pandemic, the UNT Dallas mobile food pantry has become a crucial resource, continuing its monthly service to support both UNT Dallas students and the broader North Texas community.
The service operates as a free drive-through, open to the public and anyone in need of food support. Participants will fill out a simple intake form while remaining in their vehicles. Volunteers will then place a box of food in the trunk of each car.
The next mobile food pantry will take place on Oct. 18 and will continue on a monthly basis throughout the remainder of the year.
The UNT Dallas campus, located at 7300 University Hills Blvd., Dallas, TX 75241, is the venue for this community service.
If you would like to volunteer, complete the online volunteer form: NTFB 2024 volunteer sign-up. Volunteers are asked to report to campus between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m.
