Inventions, creativity and a celebration is what’s to be expected at the upcoming kickoff for MakerSpace at Frisco’s Sci-Tech Discovery Center. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11 and is open to the public and all ages. They’re having a fair the same weekend, too.
MakerSpace is a current or future engineer’s dream. This new addition to the Sci-Tech Discovery Center will give tinkerers, inventors and hobbyists an opportunity to play with programs, technology and tools to test, prototype, demonstrate and build anything imaginable. Raytheon Company’s $50,000 donation to Sci-Tech has made carrying the relatively new MakerSpace possible for those interested in DIY projects in design, engineering, fabrication and education for Collin County.
Trudy Sullivan, Vice President, Communication & Public Affairs at Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems, said in a press release, “This Makerspace provides a community anchor for a hands-on, high-tech, math and science experience that will reach schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, veterans and the general public. It helps take learning from abstract to tangible and offers a great reward for current and future engineers.”
The grand opening celebration will include MakerSpace tours as well as scheduled workshops geared toward a variety of age groups. Entrance into MakerSpace is free with regular Sci-Tech admission price from June 13–fall 2016.
A second annual Frisco Mini Maker Faire will also be held at Sci-Tech throughout the weekend of June 11–12 (Saturday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Sunday 12–6 p.m.). Hear from special guests, see creative demonstrations and view a collection of vendors. It’s a festival of innovation for families and enthusiasts! And it’s only $5 to $10, or included with Sci-Tech admission. Saturday will focus on the technological aspects of the Maker movement, such as stop-motion animation and quadcopter robotics. Sunday will focus on jewelry making, sewing and more artistic making opportunities.
