The PGA TOUR’s CJ CUP Byron Nelson isn’t going anywhere, at least not until 2030. Invited, the global leader in private clubs, and the city of McKinney officially extended their partnership with the PGA TOUR to keep the tournament anchored at TPC Craig Ranch for another six years.
More Than a Tournament
First launched in 1944 as the Texas Victory Open, the tournament is steeped in Texas golf history. Its namesake, Byron Nelson, won that very first event and went on to become one of the most revered figures in the sport. Since being renamed in his honor in 1968, the Byron Nelson tournament has carried forward his legacy, one that continues to inspire a new generation of golf fans and pros alike.
This year, local favorite and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler added his name to the tournament’s storied list of champions, further cementing Byron Nelson’s relevance in the modern era.
While the pros chase birdies, the real impact of the tournament happens off the course. Hosted by the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, the Byron Nelson benefits the Momentous Institute, a nonprofit focused on children's mental health. Since it began, the tournament has raised more than $190 million for the organization, making it one of the most charitable events on the PGA TOUR.

“The extension of THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch is tremendous news for McKinney,” said McKinney Mayor George Fuller. “This tournament has not only delivered significant economic benefits to our city, but it also gives us a unique opportunity to showcase McKinney to a global audience.”
Why McKinney Made the Cut
TPC Craig Ranch was always built with big dreams. Designed in 2004 with hopes of landing the Byron Nelson, the course had its moment in 2021 when it officially became the tournament’s home. It wasn’t a fluke.
“We hadn’t hosted anything there since 2012, and it was amazing how different it was,” David Pillsbury, CEO of ClubCorp, previously told Local Profile. “McKinney has grown so much in a few years, and it became clear to us that the right choice was to make our new home in McKinney.”
The par-72 course stretches 7,468 yards and is known for its fan-friendly layout and challenging final holes. The format is a traditional 72-hole stroke play with a 36-hole cut.
Thanks to that vision, and a lot of behind-the-scenes effort, McKinney is now a recurring stop on the PGA TOUR map, with a community impact that reaches far beyond the fairways.
