In 2021, Porsche announced it launched a new retail concept called Destination Porsche that expands from the traditional dealership to include a community experience center for Porsche enthusiasts to visit with family and friends. The first U.S. location will be in Plano, Texas.
During a zoning and planning commission meeting on Dec. 18, 2023, the commission approved a request for a special use permit to allow a 250,000 square-foot, two to five-story building at an undeveloped patch of land at the southwest corner of Tennyson Parkway and Dallas Parkway.
According to a presentation by the commission’s staff, the design of the new facility features a two-story vehicle showroom area below a three-story parking garage capable of accommodating 454 garage spaces and a total of 689 parking spaces. Additionally, the center will feature a vehicle photo booth where cars will get 360º photos.
As Plano Magazine points out, another feature will be air-conditioned registration lanes for car service from where people can see other cars being serviced. “I characterize it more as a jewel box type site,” said during the meeting Bill Dhalstrom, a land-use attorney representing the applicant. “You [can] see what’s going on inside the facility with the operations, the beautiful vehicles and that’s all part of the design, [Porsche’s] new corporate architecture.”
Dhalstrom explained that the new dealership will relocate the existing Porsche Plano location at 5924 W Plano Parkway, adding, “The Audi dealer next door needs to expand so we needed a place to put Porsche, we wanted to stay in Plano.”
“Destination Porsche unites people’s imagination for the future, representing a new design concept, enhanced customer experience and an exciting digital lifestyle,” said the company in a statement in 2021. “It will play a core role in Porsche’s future retail strategy and will be a significant vehicle to communicate with customers.”
