When Lawler Middle School opened its doors in 2018, few could have predicted that its orchestra would quickly become one of the most decorated young music programs in Texas. Yet just eight years later, the Lawler Symphony Orchestra once again earned the state’s highest honor, being named the 2026 Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Honor Full Orchestra.

For those outside the music world, this isn’t just another plaque for the trophy case — it’s the single most prestigious recognition a student ensemble in Texas can achieve.

Back-To-Back Champions

This isn’t the orchestra’s first brush with statewide glory. Lawler previously won the honor in 2024, then sat out of the competition the following year as part of TMEA’s rules. Returning in 2026, they reclaimed the title, essentially going two-for-two in their eligible years.

It’s a rare feat that puts Lawler among the state’s elite programs, despite the school’s relatively short history.

The Team Behind The Music

The Lawler Symphony Orchestra is led by a team of directors — Christine LaLonde, Christian Holzer, Kevin Sluder, Jay McKellar and Madalynn May — who together have built a program where young musicians thrive.

“This achievement reflects the incredible dedication of our students, the unwavering support of our community and the collaborative work of an amazing group of educators and families,” LaLonde said in an official statement. “It truly takes a great team to achieve something this special. We are proud to represent the tradition of excellence at Lawler Middle School — and we can’t wait to keep making music and memories together!”

A District Tradition Of Excellence

Lawler’s win is just the latest in a string of fine arts triumphs across Frisco ISD.

  • The FISD Elementary Honor Choir was named a 2025 Honor Ensemble and performed at the TMEA conference earlier this year.
  • Lone Star High School’s band earned the 5A Honor Band title in 2024.
  • Wakeland High School’s band finished as runner-up for the 2026 5A Honor Band, on top of its steady success at UIL Marching Championships.
  • Fowler Middle School placed fifth in full orchestra and sixth in string orchestra at the state level.

Taking The Stage In San Antonio

The Lawler Full Orchestra now looks ahead to February 2026, when they’ll perform at the TMEA Clinic and Convention in San Antonio’s Henry B. González Convention Center. Thousands of music educators and students will be in attendance, making it one of the most high-profile stages for young musicians in the country.

For Lawler, the spotlight is nothing new — but the excitement never fades.
